I Love the Holidays

I really love the holidays.  When I was growing up, my mother decked the halls with all manner of Christmas decorations.  A beautiful tree with the bubbling lights (of the 40s & 50s) and a beautiful handmade Christmas tree apron as well as a lovely tall tree.  I also watched Mom make cookies out of a cookie press when I was a child.  She made them in all kinds of beautiful colors with silver decor.  They were delicious too.  It was alot of fun to watch her make the cookies (except for the time that I tipped over the large flour bin).

Mom always went just gaga over the hol.idays (even Easter).  She was a very talented cook and made cakes in all shapes and sizes (an Easter bunny cake for instance).   But the early memories of the joy that she taught me to enjoy with the holidays I still rermember.  There is one memory that my cousin Cindy and I both remember is one where our parents got together to go to my mom's grandmother's house on Park Street in Longview, Texas.  My grandmother was there and she gave Cindy and I lots of hugs and kisses as well as our great-grandmother.  Our folks had a wonderful time and lots of laughter.  A picture was made of my cousin with her dad and my father and me right next to the Christmas tree.  Cindy was holding a doll and a lollipop was in her mouth.  My dad was holding a football and I, I think, was holding a doll.  Good memories of so very long ago.

Mom always had a delight in the holidays and it's probably why I enjoy them so.  I love the lights, the music, the ambiance of getting together with loved ones and good friends.  I love the green cookies (unfortunately, I have to buy one of the packages and turn my mouth green)!  Don't even let me near the commissary during the holidays (with the German cookies and rum candies and this and that).  I want to pass out goodies to all my neighbors and often do just that.  I love to ride around in the car and look at the lights along with my  husband and dog and also listen to Christmas music (singing along with it).  I love the Christmas movies and I never get tired of the National Lampoon Christmas Vacation with the Griswolds! as well as all the old Christmas movies.

I love to have friends over to laugh and be silly (jolly?) over the Christmas holidays.  I love to buy Christmas gifts.  I think I have the same kind of holiday cheer as my Mom did & does oveer the holidays.  I feel so fortunate to have been around my mom during those early Christmas years of the 1950s.

Greg and I wish all my readers and friends a Wonderful Christmas from New Mexico.

  1. Hi, Suzanne. What lovely memories! I hope we can make some new ones when you and Greg visit before Christmas. We've been doing some exploring and have some great places to show you (or to recommend that you visit). Just discovered a 3000 sq. ft. bead store! And a winery where you can picnic and gaze up at the mountains while sipping glasses of their wine! A lovely old plaza lined with luminarias! Can't wait until you come down.
